Accuphase

About Accuphase Laboratory, Inc.

Accuphase Laboratory, Inc. is the best Japanese high-end audio equipment manufacturer founded by former Kenwood engineer Jiro Kasuga in 1972 and is based in Yokohama.

The name Accuphase was adapted by taking the prefix ACCU from the word “accurate” and combining it with PHASE, which is a most important factor in audio technology. We feel it is a very fitting brand name to describe the products produced and encompasses this and other important characteristics, which penetrate the innermost depth of audio technology. The endless pursuit of quality requires a very high degree of processing which persuades Accuphase to avoid the use of mass production systems. Consequently, production volume is limited and Accuphase products are available only at a restricted number of specialized sales points around the world.

Accuphase’s philosophy has gravitated around the slogan “Enrich Life through Technology,” which  was also the common thread that brought together the group of very highly skilled audio experts who are producing the successful Accuphase audio equipment. It is the guiding principle behind all Accuphase components whose high construction grade can be considered extravagant. However, just as there are exquisite musical instruments that are especially highly prized, Accuphase believes that the same applies to audio components. It is the reason why Accuphase strives to build extra value into each of the units so that they will display fully the merits of hand craftsmanship.

Accuphase products are well regarded by high-end audio enthusiasts worldwide, but the brand is not widespread in the US. They have a characteristic champagne color faceplates and large analog power meters.

Finally, Accuphase equipment is not subject to the whims of market fashion since they are made, above all, to achieve true high fidelity sound reproduction. This is the foremost reason why their products have enjoyed long-run production and enjoyed by many customers around the world for long time.

Equally interesting are the business principles that guided Accuphase over the years of operation:

  • Avoid undue company expansion, in keeping with the principle of “small numbers ‒ exceptional talent”.
  • Avoid drastic changes in design.
  • Make products that last a long time.
  • Design products to be sturdy, but easy to fix, if necessary. This means a clean and aesthetically pleasing look internally, as well.
  • High quality, long-term reliability, and safety are paramount.
  • Give priority to quality over quantity, producing an ample number of models in small quantities.
  • Keep capital within the company.
  • Aim for improved capital adequacy ratio.
  • Strongly adhere to debt-free management.
  • Fulfill all tax liabilities and maintain in-house reserves.

Over the course of one year until the introduction of the first products, the private home of Jiro Kasuga in the Ota district of Tokyo actually served as an office and the location where design work was going on. At the time, stereo reproduction of music had just become widespread in Japan, and the audio industry was flourishing, but its output was limited to mass-produced general-appeal products. There was practically no manufacturer specializing in high-end audio. Accuphase was born with the dream doing just that, aiming to create high-end audio components that would be best-in-class worldwide.
